AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Jailed Bahraini Shiite cleric Sheikh Zuhair Ashour has been in solitary confinement since last Thursday, according to rights campaigner Ebtisam al-Saegh.
Al-Saegh said in a social media post on Monday that the cleric had been repeatedly confined to solitary throughout his detention for continuing to hold religious lectures and defending the rights of other prisoners.
Sheikh Ashour was convicted on ‘terrorism’ charges following a 2013 trial that was marred by allegations of torture and coerced confessions. He is currently serving life in prison.
The cleric is among dozens of Bahraini Shiite religious figures jailed in recent years.
Rights groups attribute those arrests to Manama’s broader campaign to marginalize Bahrain’s Shiite majority by undermining the sect’s religious, social, political and cultural rights.
