Bahraini detainee Ali Al-Hajee remains on hunger strike, which has reportedly stretched on for more than 70 days now.
AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahraini detainee Ali Al-Hajee remains on hunger strike, which has reportedly stretched on for more than 70 days now.
In a Twitter post on Monday, the London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) reported that Al-Hajee’s hunger strike entered its 72nd day.
“All he is asking for is to be able to embrace his children,” BIRD’s tweet added.
One of Al-Hajee’s conditions for ending his hunger strike is the removal of glass partitions in Bahraini detention facilities, which are designed to prevent prisoners from having any kind of physical contact with visiting family members.
The hunger striker has been boycotting family visits since February 2017 due to the presence of the barriers.
He is also demanding access to medical care and an end to ill-treatment in detention.
BIRD released a letter from Al-Hajee last week in which he claims to be living “in a state of deteriorating psychological and physical health as a result of the hunger strike and the anguish accompanying it.”
“My weight has dropped to 61 kilograms, and I suffer general bodily weakness and limb stiffness during sleep,” the letter reads. “I remain on strike awaiting my legitimate demands to be met.”
