AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The office of the UN human rights chief strongly condemned last week’s executions of two Bahrainis, Ali al-Arab and Ahmed al-Malali.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Rupert Colville, said Manama went ahead with the executions despite the UN’s concerns “about allegations that the men’s ‘confessions’ were obtained through torture, and about lack of due process and fair trial guarantees.”
Al-Mullali and Al-Arab were convicted on ‘terrorism’ charges in January 2018 following a mass trial involving more than 50 other defendants.
Colville also expressed concerns about the “future of other detainees who remain on death row in Bahrain and are at risk of imminent execution.”
“We call on the Bahraini Government to halt all pending executions, and ensure a re-trial of these and other defendants whose rights may have been violated,” he added.
Moreover, Colville echoed calls by UN experts for Manama to establish an official moratorium on all executions.
At the start of 2017, executions resumed in Bahrain for the first time in seven years when three torture victims were killed by firing squad.
